Vodacom M-Pesa Redefines Cross-Border Payments in Tanzania
Vodacom Tanzania’s M-Pesa is making significant strides towards integrating Tanzanian users into the global digital economy. With the launch of a comprehensive suite of cross-border payment solutions, M-Pesa is dramatically expanding the reach and functionality available to its users, allowing for easier international transactions.
M-Pesa’s Global Payment Ecosystem
This expansion aims to address the traditional challenges of international payments, which are often costly, slow, and insecure for Tanzanian businesses and travelers. M-Pesa’s new “Global Payment” ecosystem is built through strategic partnerships, offering several key features. Notably, M-Pesa has introduced a tokenized Visa card, a first in Africa, that enables customers to make global Tap & Pay transactions via their smartphones. This provides a secure and contactless payment method accepted wherever Visa is available. Furthermore, a partnership with Thunes allows M-Pesa users to seamlessly pay merchants in China using Alipay, facilitating international trade. A connection with TerraPay enables transactions with select merchants in Dubai, while interoperability with Ugandan mobile money systems, also powered by Thunes, allows Tanzanians to directly pay merchants in Uganda.
By offering these new capabilities, M-Pesa is solidifying its position as one of Africa’s most advanced digital payment systems, empowering Tanzanian users to participate more fully in the global digital economy.
