Uber South Africa Electrifies, Aims for Zero Emissions by 2040
Uber South Africa is making significant strides towards its global commitment to a completely zero-emission platform by 2040, having recently deployed its initial electric vehicle (EV) fleet in Johannesburg. This marks a crucial step in the company’s broader sustainability strategy within the African market.
# Electric Rides in Johannesburg
Currently, 70 electric vehicles are operating on Johannesburg’s roads, with Uber planning to increase this number to 350 by the end of January. These EVs, specifically the Henrey Minicar imported from China, are being provided through a strategic partnership with Valternative Energy. Valternative already collaborates with Uber on electric motorcycles and brings its expertise in sustainable transportation solutions to this new venture. Their innovative “swap-and-go” system provides electric bikes, battery-swap stations, and battery subscriptions. This approach allows drivers to rent the vehicles, eliminating the significant upfront investment typically associated with EV ownership, while also providing access to charging infrastructure. According to Deepesh Thomas, GM for Uber sub-Saharan Africa, this model offers drivers financial stability and access to crucial resources without the burden of vehicle purchase or financing.
Uber’s expansion into electric vehicles, alongside its existing electric motorcycle offerings (Uber Moto), signals a growing commitment to environmentally friendly transportation options in South Africa and a move towards a greener future for ride-hailing across the continent.
