Nigeria’s Smartphone Market Booms with 29% Shipment Growth in Q3 2025
Nigeria’s dynamic smartphone market has shown impressive resilience, posting its highest growth with a 29% surge in shipments during the third quarter of 2025. This significant rebound, detailed in a recent report by the global technology analyst firm Omdia, indicates a strong recovery for the sector after a challenging previous year. The expansion is largely credited to renewed stability in the Naira and a strategic increase in device imports by vendors looking to capitalize on the improving economic climate. This marks the second straight quarter of positive growth, firmly pulling the market out of the downturn experienced in 2024.
A Story of Economic Turnaround
The current market vitality stands in stark contrast to the difficult conditions of 2024. That year, foreign exchange (FX) reforms initiated by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) led to a significant devaluation of the national currency. The resulting volatility caused smartphone prices to soar, making new devices unaffordable for a large segment of the population. This economic pressure led to a severe slowdown in shipments in the third quarter of 2024, completely reversing an impressive 63% growth surge that had been recorded at the end of 2023. The impact was clear in trade figures, as total smartphone imports into Nigeria fell from $704.76 million in 2023 to $467.70 million in 2024.
The tide has clearly turned in 2025. The stabilization of the Naira has restored consumer purchasing power and vendor confidence, creating a fertile ground for growth. The accelerated import activity by smartphone brands in Q3 2025 reflects a proactive strategy to meet pent-up consumer demand. This sustained recovery highlights the inherent potential within Nigeria’s tech ecosystem and signals a promising outlook for the remainder of the year and beyond, reinforcing its position as a key market in the African tech landscape.
