From NITDA & Interswitch to Product Company: The Tech Journey of Unyime Tommy

Unyime Tommy’s path from a curious child to the founder of Assurdly, a product delivery company, is an inspiring testament to the power of access and adaptation in the African tech landscape. Her journey highlights how leveraging opportunities and mastering essential skills can lead to entrepreneurial success, even without formal coding expertise. This narrative underscores the growing trend of non-coders thriving in the technology sector, shaping the tech ecosystem in Nigeria and beyond.

Access, Platforms, and the Birth of Assurdly

Tommy’s early encounters with technology were rooted in everyday experiences. Her mother’s business center and her secondary school’s computers served as the initial gateways. These experiences ignited a passion that led her to switch from studying Medicine to Information and Communication Technology at Covenant University. Post-graduation, her career took off with a role at the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) during her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program. Later, she honed her skills as a Quality Assurance (QA) professional at Interswitch. Her ability to navigate platforms, understand people, and seize opportunities, rather than coding prowess, proved to be her key differentiator. This mastery eventually fueled her transition from a 9-to-5 job at Interswitch to founding Assurdly, a product delivery company. Her experience demonstrates that understanding platforms and people, coupled with a knack for identifying opportunities, can be a winning formula for building a successful career in tech, especially in a continent like Africa, where resources and opportunities can be limited.

Her story is a reminder that in the dynamic tech industry, the ability to adapt, learn, and leverage available resources is just as crucial as technical coding skills. Unyime Tommy’s journey is an inspiring blueprint for aspiring tech entrepreneurs across Africa, proving that with the right mindset and skills, anyone can build a thriving product company.
