M-PESA Launches Lehulum Platform, Expanding Mobile Money Access in Ethiopia

M-PESA Ethiopia has introduced M-PESA Lehulum, a new platform designed to broaden access to mobile money services across all telecommunications networks in the country. This launch represents a significant advancement in interoperability within Ethiopia’s burgeoning fintech sector, enabling customers to utilize M-PESA services regardless of their SIM card or mobile network operator.

# Breaking Down Barriers to Digital Finance

The arrival of M-PESA Lehulum coincides with the increasing adoption of digital finance solutions throughout Ethiopia. Data from mid-2024 indicates a substantial presence of digital financial tools, with over 107 million mobile money and wallet registrations and almost 40 million mobile banking accounts recorded. This high level of engagement underscores a growing need for accessible and convenient digital financial tools, particularly among the country’s younger demographics and urban residents. M-PESA Lehulum addresses this need by operating independently of specific telecom providers. Users can register using any Ethiopian phone number and verify their identity via the Fayda national ID system, further streamlining the onboarding process.

M-PESA Lehulum’s network-agnostic approach promises to foster greater financial inclusion and accessibility in Ethiopia. By removing the constraint of network dependency, the platform empowers more Ethiopians to participate in the digital economy.
