Southern Africa Grapples with DDoS Attack Surge: NETSCOUT 1H 2025 Report Highlights South Africa as Prime Target
A new report from NETSCOUT reveals a concerning trend for Southern Africa: a significant increase in Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks. The company’s Threat Intelligence Report for the first half of 2025 paints a picture of escalating cyber threats, with South Africa bearing the brunt of the malicious activity.
Key Findings: DDoS Attacks in Southern Africa
South Africa experienced a staggering 60% jump in DDoS attacks, recording over 213,000 incidents within the six-month period. This surge solidified its position as the region’s primary target. The country also faced the most powerful single attack in Southern Africa, peaking at a massive 312 Gbps. While Mauritius saw a slight dip in attacks, recording 38,906 incidents compared to 41,800 in the previous six months, Angola experienced a significant decrease, dropping from 19,046 to 4,792 attacks. Interestingly, Botswana, despite a lower overall attack volume, faced the longest average attack duration at nearly 59 minutes, closely followed by Angola at 53 minutes. This highlights that even countries with fewer attacks can suffer substantial disruption and impact. Zambia and Zimbabwe were also listed in the report.
The findings underscore the urgent need for enhanced cybersecurity measures across Southern Africa. As digital infrastructure becomes increasingly critical for economic activity, protecting against DDoS attacks is essential to ensure business continuity and safeguard online services. The region’s governments and organizations must prioritize proactive threat mitigation strategies to combat this growing cyber threat.
