Ghana to Boost Power Supply with New 1200MW Thermal Plant
Ghana is set to significantly enhance its electricity generation capacity with the construction of a new 1,200-megawatt state-owned thermal power plant, slated to begin in 2026. The announcement was made by Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, during the 2026 Budget presentation in Parliament on Thursday, November 13, 2025. The project is aimed at providing a reliable and affordable power supply to meet growing demands, strengthen the nation’s energy security, and facilitate its transition to a gas-to-power economy.
Gas-to-Power Transformation
Dr. Forson emphasized that the new thermal plant is integral to Ghana’s gas-to-power strategy, a move away from reliance on expensive light crude oil towards cleaner, locally sourced natural gas. Recent expansions by the Offshore Cape Three Points (OCTP) partners, along with the Jubilee and TEN fields, have already increased gas production by over 50 million standard cubic feet per day in the past 10 months. Further agreements are projected to add another 150 million standard cubic feet daily, ensuring a sufficient and secure fuel supply for the operation of the new thermal plant.
This significant investment in power infrastructure underscores Ghana’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions and economic growth. By leveraging its natural gas resources, Ghana aims to stabilize electricity costs, reduce its carbon footprint, and secure a more reliable energy future for its citizens and industries.
