Cyberattack Targets Kenyan Government Websites with Hate Speech

Early Monday morning, a coordinated cyberattack struck numerous Kenyan government websites, causing significant disruption and raising serious concerns about national cybersecurity. The attackers replaced the standard content with disturbing neo-Nazi and white supremacist propaganda.

Extent of the Attack

The attack impacted a wide range of critical government ministries and agencies. Key websites taken offline included those belonging to the Ministries of Health, Education, Labour, Environment, ICT, Tourism, Energy, Water, and Interior. The State House website, the official online presence of the President, was also compromised. Other important institutions affected were the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, the Immigration Department, the Public-Private Partnerships Directorate, the Government Press, the Hustler Fund portal, and even the Nairobi County website. Visitors to these sites were met with defaced pages containing hate speech.

This large-scale cyberattack highlights the vulnerability of government digital infrastructure in Kenya and emphasizes the urgent need for improved cybersecurity measures. The incident not only disrupted access to vital public services but also exposed citizens to hateful and offensive content, underscoring the severity of the breach.
