Vanu and Amazon Team Up to Bridge Africa’s Rural Connectivity Gap
A significant leap towards improved mobile broadband access in underserved regions of Southern Africa is underway, thanks to a new partnership between Vanu and Amazon. Announced at the Africa Tech Summit 2025 in Cape Town, this collaboration unites Vanu, a US-based expert in rural connectivity solutions, with Amazon’s Project Kuiper, a satellite network designed to enhance internet availability in remote locations.
Project Kuiper to Power Vanu’s Rural Expansion
The core of this partnership involves Vanu integrating Project Kuiper’s low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite backhaul services into its existing offerings. Scheduled to commence in 2026, this integration will facilitate the expansion of mobile broadband services in areas traditionally difficult to reach. By utilizing Kuiper’s satellite connectivity, Vanu aims to circumvent the financial and logistical hurdles associated with deploying traditional fibre optic or microwave networks in sparsely populated rural areas. This approach promises a more efficient and cost-effective method of establishing mobile sites, bringing much-needed digital access to previously excluded communities across Africa.
