Starlink and FibreOne Surge as Spectranet Subscriber Base Dips Below 100K
The Nigerian internet service provider (ISP) landscape witnessed a significant shift in the second half of 2025. Starlink and FibreOne have shown remarkable recovery, solidifying their positions as the second and third largest ISPs in the country, respectively. This resurgence coincides with a troubling decline for Spectranet, a long-standing market leader, whose subscriber base has dipped below 100,000, a threshold not seen since the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) began tracking ISP data.
Spectranet’s Struggle and the Rise of Alternatives
Spectranet’s woes were highlighted by a loss of 3,732 subscribers in the second quarter of 2025, shrinking their user base from 103,252 to 99,520. This substantial drop signals potential issues with service quality, customer satisfaction, and overall competitive strategy. Interestingly, Starlink also experienced a temporary setback, losing over 6,000 subscribers, falling from 65,564 to 59,509 during the same period. However, the satellite-based ISP demonstrated resilience, bouncing back to 66,523 subscribers by the end of Q2 2025, surpassing its Q4 2024 performance. This recovery highlights the enduring appeal of Starlink’s satellite-based internet solution in the Nigerian market.
The shifting dynamics within the Nigerian ISP market suggest that consumers are increasingly seeking alternative solutions. Starlink’s ability to recover quickly and FibreOne’s consistent growth showcase the potential of innovative technologies and robust infrastructure to capture market share. Spectranet’s continued decline underscores the importance of adapting to changing consumer needs and maintaining a competitive edge in the rapidly evolving telecommunications sector.
