Nigeria’s National ID Verification System Faces Unexplained Overhaul
Nigeria’s identity verification infrastructure appears to be undergoing a significant and unannounced transformation, leaving many stakeholders in the dark. Key components of the National Identity Management Commission’s (NIMC) verification system are currently offline, raising concerns among banks, telecom companies, and fintech firms that rely on it for customer identification and onboarding.
# NIMC Services Offline, No Explanation Given
The NIMC Mobile Web Service (MWS) portal, a crucial tool for businesses to verify customer identities using their National Identification Numbers (NIN), is currently inaccessible, returning error messages. Furthermore, the official NIMC mobile application has been removed from both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store, making it impossible for citizens to download or update it. Despite these widespread disruptions, the NIMC has yet to issue any official statement or explanation regarding the changes, fueling speculation and uncertainty within the Nigerian tech and financial sectors. It is worth noting that this coincides with the recent launch of NINAuth, a new digital verification platform unveiled by President Bola Tinubu.
The lack of communication from the NIMC is particularly concerning given the critical role of the national ID system in various sectors of the Nigerian economy.
