Edo E-Hailing Drivers Prepare for 50% Fare Hike, Mirroring Port Harcourt’s Challenges

E-hailing drivers in Edo State are set to implement a significant fare increase, mirroring similar actions taken in other Nigerian cities like Port Harcourt. Faced with dwindling incomes from platforms like Uber and Bolt, drivers are seeking to improve their earnings by unilaterally raising prices. This move highlights the ongoing tension between drivers, ride-hailing companies, and passengers in the Nigerian tech and transportation landscape.

Addressing Declining Earnings

The Amalgamated Union of App-based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON) in Edo State, under the leadership of Chairman Comrade Russell Eghaghe, has announced that drivers will be increasing fares by 50% above the prices displayed on the Uber and Bolt applications. This change is scheduled to take effect on Saturday, November 15th. According to Comrade Eghaghe, the decision is a direct response to the shrinking profitability of e-hailing services for drivers. While acknowledging that the increase may seem unfair to riders, he argues that drivers, like everyone else, should be able to adjust their rates to account for rising operational costs.

This price hike reflects a growing trend among e-hailing drivers across Nigeria who are struggling to maintain a viable income in the face of increasing expenses and fixed app-determined fares. The situation puts pressure on ride-hailing companies to find solutions that balance affordability for passengers and fair compensation for drivers, ensuring the sustainability of the e-hailing ecosystem in Nigeria.
