Government Illuminates Path to 24-Hour Economy with Street Lighting Project

Ghana is taking significant steps to boost its economy and improve nighttime safety with the launch of a comprehensive street lighting project. Spearheaded by the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, in partnership with the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Obenewaa Akwele Ocloo, the initiative aims to rehabilitate existing streetlights and install new ones across regional and district capitals in the Greater Accra Region. This project directly supports the government’s vision of a 24-hour economy, fostering productivity and economic activity beyond traditional daylight hours.

Key Aspects of the Street Lighting Initiative

The project encompasses two crucial components: the repair and restoration of existing streetlights to ensure functionality and the strategic installation of new, solar-powered streetlights in areas currently lacking grid infrastructure. Deputy Minister for Energy, Richard Gyan-Mensah, emphasized the vital role of street lighting in creating safer environments for nighttime activities and stimulating economic growth. Gyan-Mensah stated, “We are looking at productivity beyond the daylight hours, and street lighting is key to this goal.” The focus on solar-powered streetlights underscores a commitment to sustainable energy solutions and extending the reach of lighting infrastructure to underserved districts.

This street lighting rehabilitation and installation project represents a crucial investment in Ghana’s infrastructure and economic future. By prioritizing safety, promoting economic activity around the clock, and embracing sustainable energy solutions, the government is paving the way for a more vibrant and productive society. The successful implementation of this project promises to have a significant positive impact on communities throughout the Greater Accra Region and serve as a model for similar initiatives across the country.
