Safaricom’s M-PESA Foundation Commits KES 30 Billion to Education Overhaul
In a significant development for Kenya’s technology and education landscape, Safaricom’s M-PESA Foundation has announced a major five-year education initiative. Titled “Citizens of the Future,” the program aims to substantially improve learning and training outcomes across the nation. This ambitious project represents an initial investment of approximately KES 30 billion, signaling a deep commitment to fostering the next generation of skilled individuals through strategic technological and infrastructural support. The initiative will focus on modernizing educational facilities and empowering both students and educators with the tools necessary for success in a digital world.
A Three-Pillar Strategy for Future-Ready Learning
The “Citizens of the Future” program is structured around a multi-pronged approach to address critical gaps in the education system. A core component involves upgrading the infrastructure in over 600 institutions nationwide, transforming them into model “Schools of the Future” that reflect modern learning environments. Alongside physical upgrades, the program will prioritize enhancing teacher skills in Information and Communication Technology (ICT), ensuring educators are well-equipped to deliver contemporary digital curriculums. Furthermore, the initiative will directly support learners by awarding scholarships to more than 10,000 students in senior secondary and tertiary institutions, easing access to advanced education and vocational training for deserving candidates.
Safaricom’s Chief Executive Officer, Peter Ndegwa, emphasized the program’s holistic vision. “We have developed education interventions that seek to bridge the gap through innovation and material support,” he stated. “Under the Citizens of the Future Program, we are consolidating our initiatives to ease access to education from early learning to technical and vocational training in an initial investment of about KES30 billion in the next five years.” This consolidates the company’s efforts into a cohesive strategy aimed at creating a lasting impact on Kenya’s educational framework and preparing its youth for future opportunities.
