UNILAG Clarifies: No Fee Hike, Just NELFund Integration
The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has addressed concerns regarding recent adjustments observed on undergraduate student portals, firmly stating that there has been no increase in tuition fees or mandatory charges. These changes, the university clarified, are instead a restructuring of payment processes mandated by the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFund). The integration aims to streamline fee payments by consolidating all applicable charges into a single, unified system, making it easier for students accessing NELFund loans.
Understanding the Portal Adjustments
Concerns arose earlier in the week when students noticed what appeared to be increased fees on their student portals. This prompted fears of another fee hike, particularly given the challenging economic climate affecting many students and their families. However, according to Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, Head of the Communication Unit at UNILAG, the updated figures represent a consolidation of faculty and departmental dues. These dues, previously paid separately, are now combined into a single payment as per NELFund’s directive. Payment advice slips for returning students reflect these adjustments, clarifying that the total payable amount has not increased, simply been restructured for easier NELFund compatibility.
In conclusion, UNILAG has reassured its students that the observed changes on their portals are not indicative of a fee increase. The adjustments are solely for the purpose of integrating with the NELFund system, consolidating previously separate charges into a single payment, ultimately intended to facilitate access to student loans and simplify the payment process.
