Tunisia Telecom’s Subsea Cables Drive Digital Transformation

Submarine Cables: The Lifeline of Global Telecommunications

Submarine cables, both national and international, are the backbone of global telecommunication networks, handling over 95% of the world’s internet traffic and data exchange. These underwater cables are critical infrastructure, facilitating seamless connectivity and driving the digital economy.

Tunisia’s Digital Connection Through Subsea Cables

In Tunisia, Tunisie Telecom, as the national operator, holds a pivotal role in developing this strategic infrastructure. This ensures the country’s digital sovereignty and continuous connectivity, both within Tunisia and with the rest of the world. The SEA-ME-WE 1 submarine cable, established in 1985, marked a significant milestone for Tunisian telecommunications. This first international submarine cable directly connected Tunisia to global networks across the Mediterranean Sea, extending through numerous Asian and European countries.
