Ghanaian Girls Triumph at 2019 Robofest World Championship
In a remarkable achievement highlighting the growing strength of STEM education in Africa, a team of nine Ghanaian girls, known as Team Acrobot, secured first place in the senior category of the 2019 Robofest World Championship held in Michigan, USA. Their victory underscores the potential and talent emerging from Ghana’s educational institutions.
Acrobot’s Winning Performance
Representing Methodist Girls’ High School (MGHS) in Akuapim-Mamfe, located in Ghana’s Eastern Region, Team Acrobot faced stiff competition from 25 other teams hailing from countries like Mexico, Egypt, South Korea, and the United States. The challenge required them to design and build a robot capable of arranging boxes according to a binary number revealed to them during the contest. Under the guidance of Dr. Yaw Okraku-Yirenkyi, a founding member of the Ghana Robotics Academy Foundation, the team’s innovative robot demonstrated superior precision and efficiency, ultimately securing their victory. The U.S. Embassy in Ghana proudly acknowledged the win, emphasizing their partnership with the Ghana Robotics Academy Foundation to further promote STEM education in the country.
This victory for Team Acrobot is not only a source of national pride for Ghana but also serves as an inspiration for young women across Africa to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. It demonstrates the impact of focused STEM initiatives and the ability of African students to compete and excel on a global stage.
