Synnefa Secures $300,000 to Expand IoT Solar Dryer Deployment in Kenya
Kenyan agritech startup Synnefa has successfully raised $300,000 to facilitate the deployment of its innovative IoT-enabled solar dryers across Kenya. The company’s goal is to significantly reduce post-harvest losses, a major challenge facing farmers in the region. Synnefa is also aiming to raise $2 million in seed funding by 2026 to expand its reach to 150,000 farmers throughout East Africa.
Tackling Food Waste and Promoting Sustainability
This expansion is projected to prevent over 50,000 metric tons of food loss, generate employment opportunities for young entrepreneurs, and drastically cut CO₂ emissions associated with wasted harvests. The initial $300,000 investment comes from a partnership between Synnefa and Solidaridad, receiving grant funding from the World Resources Institute’s Partnering for Green Growth and the Global Goals 2030 (P4G) initiative. Synnefa and Solidaridad were selected as one of 14 climate startups receiving a portion of the $3.8 million awarded for innovative climate technology solutions. According to Robyn McGuckin, Executive Director of P4G, climate startups are essential drivers of innovation and play a critical role in accelerating the transition to a low-carbon future.
Synnefa’s IoT-enabled solar dryers offer a sustainable and efficient solution to preserving crops, improving farmer incomes, and contributing to a more resilient and environmentally friendly agricultural sector in East Africa. The additional seed funding will allow Synnefa to scale its operations and further impact the livelihoods of farmers in the region, whilst promoting food security and reducing carbon emissions.
