Canal+ Reportedly Eyes Full Control of Showmax After MultiChoice Acquisition
Following its recent acquisition of MultiChoice, French media giant Canal+ is reportedly considering a complete takeover of the African streaming platform Showmax. This ambitious move signals Canal+’s intent to solidify its presence and dominance in the African media landscape.
Potential Showmax Buyout
According to MyBroadband, Canal+ SA is exploring the possibility of acquiring the remaining 30% stake in Showmax currently held by Comcast. With Canal+ already in control of MultiChoice, the majority owner of Showmax, this buyout would effectively make Showmax a wholly-owned subsidiary of Canal+. Reportedly, Canal+ has engaged advisors to assess the potential acquisition, though discussions are still in the preliminary stages and a final agreement is not guaranteed.
If successful, the full takeover of Showmax would give Canal+ complete control over the streaming service’s strategy, content, and future direction in the competitive African streaming market. This move underscores Canal+’s aggressive expansion strategy and its commitment to becoming a major player in digital entertainment across the continent.
