Africa Demands Solar Investment Boost at ISA Assembly

Africa Calls for Increased Solar Investment at International Solar Alliance Assembly

The 8th Session of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) Assembly recently convened in New Delhi, India, uniting global leaders and renewable energy experts to foster collaboration in clean energy development. Representing the African continent at the Assembly, Ghana’s Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Jinpaor, presented Africa’s regional report, highlighting the urgent need for greater investment in solar energy projects across the continent. The focus was on accelerating Africa’s transition to renewable energy sources, especially solar power.

Africa’s Untapped Solar Potential

Minister Jinpaor’s address emphasized a critical disparity: Africa houses approximately 60% of the world’s prime solar resources, yet receives a mere 2% of global clean energy investment. This stark imbalance was a major theme throughout the Assembly’s discussions. He stressed that this situation must be rectified to unlock Africa’s vast renewable energy potential, which remains largely underutilized. The minister noted that access to clean and affordable energy is crucial for the continent’s development, especially as an estimated 600 million Africans still lack access to electricity. This lack is a significant impediment to economic growth and improved living standards.

The minister’s statement is a reminder of Africa’s need to develop its own solar tech and solutions.

In conclusion, the ISA Assembly provided a platform for African nations to advocate for increased investment in solar energy. The region’s representatives are calling for significant shifts in global investment strategies to support Africa’s transition to sustainable energy. Addressing the investment gap is crucial for realizing the continent’s renewable energy goals.
