FRSC Unveils Contactless Driver’s License, Targets November for Backlog Elimination

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Nigeria has launched a transformative contactless biometric system nationwide, marking a significant stride in streamlining the driver’s license application process. This groundbreaking innovation means applicants can now complete their biometric capture without any physical contact, leading to the immediate issuance of permanent licenses. This fully digital and automated approach is set to abolish the frustrating waiting periods and the reliance on temporary documents that have long plagued the system, fundamentally enhancing service delivery for Nigerian citizens.

Enhancing Efficiency Through Advanced Technology

Announced during the 2025 Ember Months Road Safety Campaign launch in Abuja, themed “Tech Responsibility for Your Safety: Stop Distracted Driving,” this initiative underscores the FRSC’s commitment to leveraging technology for public good. Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed highlighted that the FRSC’s newly upgraded printing facility is now equipped to produce an impressive 15,000 licenses daily. This robust capacity is central to the corps’ ambitious goal of eliminating all existing driver’s license backlogs well before mid-November, promising an end to previous delays. The core of this system lies in its contactless technology, which captures fingerprints without physical touch, guaranteeing not only enhanced hygiene but also superior speed and accuracy in the process. Furthermore, for robust identity verification and security, the system is seamlessly integrated with Nigeria’s National Identification Number (NIN) database, solidifying its place as a pivotal advancement in digital identity management within the African tech landscape.

This strategic rollout by the FRSC represents a monumental leap towards modernizing public services and ensuring a more efficient and secure driver’s license acquisition experience for millions. By embracing cutting-edge biometric and digital solutions, the FRSC is not only addressing long-standing operational challenges but also setting a new benchmark for governmental agencies in Nigeria, promising a future of streamlined, contactless, and citizen-centric services.
