African Mobile Giants and GSMA Collaborate to Deliver $30 4G Smartphones

The GSMA, a global mobile industry association, has joined forces with six of Africa’s leading mobile operators – Airtel, Axian Telecom, Ethio Telecom, MTN, Orange, and Vodacom – to spearhead an initiative aimed at making 4G smartphones dramatically more affordable across the continent. This powerful alliance, formed under the banner of the GSMA Handset Affordability Coalition, seeks to establish a universal set of minimum technical requirements for inexpensive, entry-level 4G smartphones. The ambitious goal is to reduce the cost of smartphone ownership, thereby expanding digital inclusion for millions of Africans who currently lack internet access. This pivotal announcement was made during the MWC Kigali 2025 event, signaling a significant step towards a more connected Africa.

Unlocking Digital Access: The Urgency of Affordable Devices

The drive for more affordable 4G smartphones is critical, as device cost remains the most formidable obstacle to mobile internet adoption throughout Sub-Saharan Africa. Data from the GSMA’s State of Mobile Internet Connectivity 2025 Report underscores this challenge: globally, over 3 billion individuals reside within mobile broadband coverage areas yet do not utilize the internet, with affordability cited as their primary barrier. The report further highlights the transformative potential of lowering device costs, projecting that even a $40 smartphone could bring an additional 20 million people online in Sub-Saharan Africa. This initiative to push for a $30 device aims to surpass that impact, democratizing access to the digital world and its myriad opportunities, from education and healthcare to economic empowerment.

This strategic partnership between the GSMA and Africa’s largest mobile networks represents a concerted effort to dismantle the economic barriers hindering digital transformation. By focusing on a baseline for ultra-affordable 4G smartphones, the coalition is poised to unlock the internet’s full potential for millions, fostering widespread digital literacy and driving socio-economic growth across the continent. This collaborative vision for affordable connectivity is set to redefine Africa’s digital landscape, ensuring that more people can participate in and benefit from the global digital economy.
