The Federal Government has formally approved a new policy making the submission of students’ theses and final-year projects to the Nigeria Education Repository and Databank (NERD) a mandatory requirement. This crucial development not only aims to consolidate academic works but also serves as a prerequisite for graduates to be mobilised into the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). This initiative marks a pivotal step in standardising and enhancing the quality of academic output across the nation, embracing digital solutions for academic record-keeping in the African tech ecosystem.
Understanding the NERD Submission Process and Its National Significance
Haula Galadima, a spokesperson for NERD, underscored the core objectives behind this national initiative. He explained that the program’s primary goal is to verify the authenticity of academic works, positioning NERD as a national flagship for quality assurance. Furthermore, this policy is designed to elevate the calibre of academic content, presentation, and overall output nationwide, fostering a culture of rigorous research and originality. To ensure comprehensive documentation, each submitted item must include specific details: the full name of the student, their supervisor, any co-supervisor, the Head of Department, alongside the sponsoring institution and the department. The enforcement of these new rules, effective since October 6, is far-reaching, applying to all graduates from Nigerian universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, and even those from foreign institutions. It’s important to note, however, that the policy does not affect individuals who are currently serving corps members.
