The Crop2Cash Journey: Learning to Listen to Smallholder Farmers with Technology

The ambitious startup Crop2Cash embarked on its mission with a profound goal: to combat global hunger by empowering smallholder farmers through improved access to crucial financial loans. However, the path from this noble vision to a thriving, impactful business proved far more arduous than its founders had initially anticipated. Their journey was marked by significant setbacks, including developing unsuitable products, enduring severe financial strain during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the painstaking process of building trust within their target demographic: the farming community. This candid account reveals a vital lesson for any tech enterprise – the imperative to truly listen before creating solutions.

From Ambitious Vision to Real-World Challenges

Crop2Cash officially commenced operations on May 18, 2018, bringing together a talented trio who first connected at a university competition. The founding team included Seyi Alabi, an agronomy student with deep insights into agricultural practices; Michael Ogundare, a skilled computer scientist capable of technological innovation; and their partner, Emem Essien. Their collective passion forged a strong partnership, united by the ambitious mission of achieving “zero hunger.” Their initial foray into agricultural technology, however, demonstrated the gap between clever ideas and practical application. Alabi recalls, “The first product we built was a Facebook Messenger bot.” The design intended for this digital assistant to help smallholder farmers market their harvests and reduce post-harvest food losses, a critical issue for food security and farmer income. Yet, a sophisticated solution meant for digital interaction often missed the mark with its intended audience, highlighting the need for a more grounded approach in African agritech.

This early experience underscored a pivotal realization for Crop2Cash: innovative technology for farmers must be built with a deep understanding of their daily realities and needs. The startup’s initial missteps, from building products that farmers couldn’t easily integrate into their routines to the near-collapse during a global crisis, ultimately forged a more resilient and farmer-centric approach. Their evolving strategy, rooted in listening and adapting, became the foundation for truly impactful digital solutions for agricultural finance and crop management.
