Crypto Scams Leave Digital Footprints — Even 15 Years Later

Decentralized finance (DeFi), built on blockchain technology, is rapidly reshaping financial landscapes, especially in Africa. Stablecoins and crypto tokens offer innovative ways to manage money, engage in cross-border trade, and access financial services, bypassing traditional banking systems. This transformation holds significant promise for the continent, offering solutions to age-old issues like fraud, high transaction fees, limited banking access, and sluggish international payments.

DeFi’s Potential and the Reality of Crypto Fraud

During a recent panel discussion at Moonshot by TechCabal, experts emphasized DeFi’s potential to revolutionize finance in Africa. David Salami, co-founder and lead engineer at Polytope Labs, highlighted how blockchains provide permissionless access, allowing Africans to overcome financial barriers and move money freely. Chainalysis data reveals the substantial adoption of cryptocurrencies in sub-Saharan Africa, with transactions totaling $205 billion between July 2024 and June 2025. Nigeria led the region with $92 billion in crypto transactions. However, the rise of DeFi also presents a challenge: The digital trails left by crypto scams can persist for years.

In essence, DeFi offers both opportunities and risks. While it promises financial inclusion and efficiency, the potential for fraud underscores the need for robust security measures and user education to ensure the long-term sustainability and trustworthiness of the crypto ecosystem in Africa.
