Google and World Bank Team Up to Build AI-Powered Infrastructure in Emerging Markets

Google and the World Bank Group are joining forces to accelerate digital transformation and promote inclusive economic growth, particularly in emerging economies. This alliance aims to leverage the power of Artificial Intelligence to connect citizens with essential services, particularly focusing on vulnerable populations in regions like Africa.

# Deploying Open Network Stacks for Critical Services

The collaboration centers around the deployment of Open Network Stacks, essentially creating digital infrastructure to facilitate access to vital services. By integrating Google Cloud’s AI capabilities, including its advanced Gemini models, with the World Bank Group’s deep understanding of development challenges, the initiative empowers governments to rapidly build interconnected networks across key sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, and skills development. This will allow citizens to easily interact with these AI-driven services in over 40 languages, even using basic devices, which is crucial for bridging the digital divide in many African countries. This builds on a successful pilot project in Uttar Pradesh, India, where thousands of smallholder farmers saw increased profits thanks to these technologies.

The broader goal is to foster a sustainable and open ecosystem. To that end, Google.org is providing financial support to Networks for Humanity (NFH), a new non-profit organization, to develop universal digital infrastructure based on open network specifications. This focus on open and interoperable systems is vital for ensuring long-term sustainability and preventing vendor lock-in within developing economies.
