Gomiz & MansA: Powering Digital Storytelling in Africa

Gomiz and MansA: Empowering African Storytelling with a Digital Engine

Elizabeth Liz Gomiz, director of MansA Maison des Mondes Africains, is spearheading an initiative to reshape the narrative landscape of Africa. Recognizing the crucial role digital platforms play in shaping culture and economic value, she is building a digital storytelling engine to ensure African stories are told by Africans, for Africans. Her core belief is that Africa’s future hinges on its ability to control the very tools that fuel its storytelling.

Building the Future of African Narrative

Gomiz emphasizes that creativity alone is insufficient. The current digital ecosystem often disadvantages African storytellers, with platforms and infrastructure primarily originating outside the continent. Speaking at Moonshot by TechCabal, she highlighted the significant shift: the digital world has become the primary arena for cultural creation, yet its underlying frameworks and algorithms often lack an understanding of African contexts. As artificial intelligence, data analytics, and digital platforms gain further cultural and economic influence, there’s a risk of African stories being filtered through systems that neither comprehend nor celebrate their origins. Major platforms such as Netflix and Amazon Prime currently dominate African storytelling, but Gomiz is determined to change this. MansA, the company she leads, is dedicated to championing projects that directly invest in African creatives, thereby fostering ownership and control over the storytelling process. A key component of this endeavor is MansA Lab, which is aimed to create future Limit to save tokens
