Ensuring Power Stability: Addressing the 161kV Aboadze Transmission Line Damage
Ghana’s energy sector faces a temporary challenge following damage to a critical transmission infrastructure. The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition recently informed the public, via an announcement on GhanaWeb.com on Wednesday, 15 October 2025, about an incident affecting the Ghana Grid Company Ltd.’s (GRIDCo) 161kV Aboadze–Tarkwa transmission line. This vital link, integral to the nation’s power distribution network, has sustained damage, prompting immediate action from energy authorities to mitigate any widespread impact on electricity supply across key regions.
Rapid Response and National Energy Security
In response to the damage, a dedicated maintenance team was swiftly dispatched to the site and is currently working tirelessly to rectify the fault on the 161kV Aboadze–Tarkwa line. Initial assessments indicate a possibility of power supply disruptions in specific areas, including parts of the Western and Ashanti Regions, particularly affecting Kumasi and Tarkwa, during this short repair period. Recognizing the urgency, the Energy Minister has also engaged various stakeholders, emphasizing the collective effort required to bolster Ghana’s overall power supply resilience. The Ministry conveyed its deep regrets for any inconvenience caused, stating, “We wish to assure the general public that every effort is being made to repair the damage and normalise the situation,” and further affirmed, “The Ministry deeply regrets any inconvenience this may cause and assures the public of our commitment to restoring full service as soon as possible.” These assurances underscore the government’s unwavering dedication to quickly restoring full service and minimizing disruption to daily life and economic activities in affected regions.
As GRIDCo’s teams work diligently on the ground, the focus remains on the rapid restoration of the 161kV Aboadze–Tarkwa transmission line. This incident highlights the continuous need for robust energy infrastructure maintenance and rapid response mechanisms, crucial for Ghana’s economic stability and development. The commitment from the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition ensures that all measures are being taken to ensure power stability for Ghanaian homes and businesses, reflecting the nation’s ongoing efforts in managing its vital energy grid.
