Canal+ to Develop Super App Unifying DStv, Netflix, and More After MultiChoice Acquisition

Following its successful acquisition of MultiChoice, Canal+ is set to revolutionize the streaming landscape in Africa and beyond. The French media giant plans to develop a comprehensive “super app” that will consolidate content from DStv and Canal+, offering subscribers a unified entertainment experience. This ambitious project could also integrate access to popular third-party streaming services like Netflix, Apple TV+, HBO Max, and Paramount+.

# One App to Rule Them All

The move comes after Canal+ finalized its MultiChoice takeover, a deal that saw over 90% of MultiChoice shareholders accepting Canal+’s R125 ($7) per share cash offer. This increased Canal+’s stake from 46% to a controlling 94.36%, allowing the company to utilize section 124(1) of the Companies Act to acquire the remaining shares. Canal+ CEO Maxime Saada has stated that simplifying the customer experience is a top priority, with the super app being a key element of this strategy.

With the merger complete, the combined entity now boasts over 40 million subscribers across 70 countries, holding a significant presence in Africa, spanning 40 nations on the continent. This positions them as a dominant force in the African entertainment market, ready to streamline access to a wide array of content through a single, user-friendly application.
