Bolt Drivers in Port Harcourt to Increase Fares by 50%, Citing Unfair Pricing Practices

E-hailing drivers in Port Harcourt, operating under the Amalgamated Union of App-based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON), are set to implement a 50% fare increase on all Bolt rides within the city. This decision stems from growing discontent among drivers regarding Bolt’s pricing strategies, specifically the perceived reduction of fares coupled with an increase in the commission charged by the app.

Drivers Cite Unfavorable Business Conditions

According to Comrade Dennis, the state task force chairman of AUATON, the fare hike is a necessary measure. He emphasized that drivers are responsible for all operational costs, including vehicle maintenance, fuel, data, and the inherent risks of transporting passengers. However, they receive no financial support from Bolt, which primarily serves as a platform connecting drivers with riders. The union maintains that the fare increase will be waived only during periods of significant surge pricing, when the app automatically adjusts fares upwards, offering drivers improved earnings. This move reflects the ongoing challenges faced by app-based transport providers in balancing profitability with competitive pricing, a common issue within the evolving African tech landscape. The union’s stance highlights the tension between ride-hailing platforms and their drivers, a dynamic frequently observed in other African cities where digital transportation is rapidly expanding.
