Ghana’s DVLA to Launch Biometric International Driver’s Licences in 2026

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) of Ghana is set to enhance its services for drivers with the introduction of biometric international driver’s licences and vehicle permits. Announced by DVLA’s Chief Executive Officer, Julius Neequaye Kotey, this initiative, slated for rollout in 2026, aims to improve the usability and recognition of Ghanaian driving documents on a global scale, particularly within the African context.

Addressing Global Travel Challenges for Ghanaian Drivers

The primary driver behind this technological upgrade is the occasional rejection of existing Ghanaian International Driver’s Licences (IDLs) and International Vehicle Permits (IVPs) by authorities in certain foreign countries. This upgrade aligns with international standards and protocols, particularly those outlined by the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO). The new biometric documents will include a bio-data page, meeting ISO specifications and ensuring greater acceptance worldwide. This move is significant, reflecting Ghana’s commitment to upholding its obligations as a signatory to the UN’s Vienna Convention on Road Traffic, thereby facilitating smoother travel experiences for Ghanaian drivers across international borders. The implementation of biometric technology in driver’s licenses demonstrates Ghana’s commitment to adopting modern technology for improved service delivery within the African tech space.

The introduction of the biometric IDL and IVP represents a proactive step by the DVLA to enhance the credibility and acceptance of Ghanaian driving documents on a global stage, thus improving the experience for Ghanaian drivers traveling internationally, as well as furthering the development of e-governance solutions across Africa.
