Sonatrach, Hecate Energy, and Tosyali Partner on Green Hydrogen Project for Steel Industry
A significant step towards sustainable industrial practices has been taken with Sonatrach, Hecate Energy Global Renewables, and Tosyali Iron Steel Industry Algérie SPA joining forces. The three companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Tuesday, June 24th, to conduct joint studies for the development of an integrated green hydrogen production project. This project aims to utilize renewable energy sources to meet the needs of the steel industry in Algeria.
Green Hydrogen for Sustainable Steel Production
The agreement, signed during the 12th edition of Sonatrach’s scientific and technical conference in Oran, outlines a two-phased approach. The first phase will concentrate on conducting thorough studies to assess the project’s viability, opportunity, and profitability. Following a successful assessment, the second phase will focus on the actual development of the project, with the goal of producing green hydrogen for Tosyali’s steel manufacturing operations. Rachid Hachichi, CEO of Sonatrach, Fouad Tosyali, Chairman of Tosyali, and David Wilhelm, CEO of Hecate Energy, formalized the partnership, marking a commitment to innovation and sustainability within Algeria’s industrial sector.
This collaboration highlights the growing importance of green hydrogen in decarbonizing energy-intensive industries like steel manufacturing. By leveraging renewable energy sources, the project aims to reduce the carbon footprint of steel production in Algeria, contributing to a more sustainable and environmentally responsible industrial landscape. This initiative could potentially serve as a model for other African nations looking to adopt green technologies and promote sustainable industrial development.
