Safaricom and Huawei Introduce VybCall, Kenya’s First Video Ring Back Tone Service
Safaricom, Kenya’s leading telecommunications provider, has teamed up with Huawei to launch VybCall, a pioneering Video Ring Back Tone (VRBT) service. This initiative marks a significant evolution of Safaricom’s entertainment offerings, following the success of its audio-based Skiza tunes, launched two decades ago. VybCall promises to redefine the caller experience with engaging video content played while waiting for a call to be answered, introducing a new dimension to the traditional ring back tone concept. This innovation highlights Safaricom’s commitment to enhancing its services and providing customers with novel digital experiences within the African tech landscape.
VybCall: Transforming the Caller Experience
VybCall allows Safaricom subscribers to replace the standard ring back tone with short, curated videos. These videos offer a variety of content, designed to entertain callers while they wait for the call to be answered. According to James Maitai, Safaricom’s CTIO, this launch is a reflection of their dedication “to give our customers choice and control through targeted experiences,” and to “transforming daily moments creatively.” Currently, the service is compatible with Safaricom’s Neon range, select Samsung and Oppo devices, and Xiaomi’s Redmi A series. Plans are underway to expand support to Vivo devices in the second quarter of 2026. Interested customers can easily activate VybCall by dialing *860on compatible devices or through the Safaricom App, accessible at vybcall.safaricom.com.
The introduction of VybCall underscores Safaricom’s continued investment in innovation within the Kenyan and broader African tech markets. By partnering with Huawei, Safaricom aims to provide a cutting-edge service that meets evolving customer preferences. This move suggests that African telecom providers are embracing new digital experiences and striving to enhance the mobile communication landscape.
