  • MTN Shuts Down Two South African Data Centers

MTN South Africa Streamlines Operations, Closes Two Data Centers

MTN South Africa is embarking on a strategic overhaul of its infrastructure, announcing the phasing out of two long-standing data center sites located in Gallo Manor (Johannesburg) and Great Westerford (Cape Town). This move signifies a significant shift in MTN’s approach to data management and infrastructure optimization within the competitive South African telecommunications landscape.

Optimizing for Efficiency and Performance

According to ITWeb, the decision to close these data centers is part of a larger initiative to streamline MTN’s data center portfolio and enhance overall operational efficiency. The company is migrating its customers from these older, third-party hosted facilities to more modern, high-performing alternatives. This includes transitioning to MTN-owned data centers and facilities managed by strategic partners such as Teraco. Notably, the Gallo Manor facility holds a unique place in South African tech history, having served as the country’s first hosting environment. However, after more than a decade of service, MTN is prioritizing infrastructure that aligns with its future growth and technological advancements.

The closure of these data centers reflects MTN’s commitment to adapting to the evolving demands of the digital economy and ensuring that its infrastructure remains competitive and efficient. By consolidating its data center operations, MTN aims to provide enhanced services and a more robust infrastructure for its customers across South Africa.
