Ghana Cybersecurity Authority Cracks Down on Online Scams, Blocks Over 1,300 SIM Cards

In a significant move to combat the rising tide of cybercrime, the Ghana Cybersecurity Authority (CSA) has announced the blocking of over 1,300 SIM cards in 2025. This action follows a marked increase in network-related crimes, particularly online scams, which have become a prevalent threat in the Ghanaian digital landscape. The CSA’s intervention highlights the escalating challenges faced by the nation in securing its digital infrastructure and protecting its citizens from online fraud.

The Growing Threat of Online Fraud in Ghana

Data released by the CSA underscores the severity of the situation. According to Isaac Socrates Mensah, a Senior Manager at the CSA, online fraud accounts for nearly half of all reported cybercrime cases this year. Impersonation scams have resulted in losses of GH¢5.66 million, while online blackmail schemes have cost victims GH¢595,000. In response to these blackmail incidents, authorities deactivated 142 phone numbers, distributed across Telecel (39), MTN (84), and AT (19). Unauthorised access incidents led to losses of GH¢172,876, and information disclosure resulted in GH¢12,079 in losses. Further network takedowns revealed 151 numbers linked to account takeovers (Telecel 96, MTN 40, AT 15) and 284 numbers connected to investment scams.

The CSA’s decisive action to block these SIM cards demonstrates a commitment to curbing online criminal activity and safeguarding the financial security of Ghanaians. As digital adoption continues to grow across the country, strengthening cybersecurity measures and raising public awareness about online threats are crucial steps in building a safer digital environment.
