African Startups Grab $140M in September, $2.2B YTD

African Startups Secure $140 Million in September, On Track for $2.2 Billion in 2025

Venture capital investment in African startups experienced a resurgence in September, with 58 companies collectively raising $140 million, according to data from Africa the Big Deal. This figure represents a significant 50.5% increase compared to the $93 million secured in August, signaling renewed investor confidence in the continent’s burgeoning tech ecosystem. While still trailing the impressive $550 million raised in July, September’s performance indicates a recovery from August’s slowdown, which was the second-lowest funding month of the year after March.

September’s Funding Performance

Despite falling short of the year’s highest figures, September’s funding total is comparable to the $146 million secured in September 2024 and surpasses the $124 million raised during the same month in 2023. The $140 million was distributed across 58 African startups that each raised at least $100,000, representing a substantial 77.7% increase in the number of companies receiving investment compared to the previous month. This positive trend suggests a broadening base of startups attracting venture capital.

The overall trajectory for venture funding in Africa remains positive. With $140 million raised in September, experts predict the total funding in 2025 will hit $2.2 billion, African tech is on track to finish the year strong, continuing to demonstrate the continent’s potential as a vibrant hub for innovation and investment.
