MOFA Distributes Seized Galamsey Water Pumps to Boost Agriculture
In a bid to bolster agricultural production and support the government’s Feed Ghana Programme, the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA) has distributed 900 water pumping machines seized from illegal mining (galamsey) operations to nine regions across Ghana. This initiative aims to provide farmers with essential resources to improve irrigation and increase crop yields.
# Empowering Farmers Through Confiscated Resources
Following a court order, MOFA received the confiscated water pumps and is distributing them to farmer cooperatives in the Upper East, Upper West, North East, Savannah, Northern, Greater Accra, Volta, Oti, and Bono East regions. Each region is set to receive 100 machines, which will then be disseminated to individual farmers. During the handover ceremony in Amrahia, Accra, sector minister Eric Opoku emphasized the significance of these machines in enhancing food production and supporting the livelihoods of farmers across the country. This move repurposes resources previously used for environmentally damaging activities towards sustainable agricultural development.
By providing these water pumps, MOFA hopes to empower farmers, increase food security, and promote sustainable agricultural practices, turning a negative situation into a positive outcome for the agricultural sector.
