GTCO’s Debit Card Transactions Surge to N2.78 Trillion in H1’25
Guaranty Trust Holding Company (GTCO), a leading financial institution in Africa, experienced a significant increase in debit card transaction value during the first half of 2025. According to the company’s financial statements, GTCO facilitated a total of N2.78 trillion in debit card transactions, reflecting strong customer adoption of digital payment methods. This impressive performance coincided with the group reporting a profit before tax of N601 billion.
Detailed Analysis of Debit Card Transactions
The N2.78 trillion in debit card transactions encompasses both local and international activity, primarily conducted using GTCO’s Naira Mastercard debit cards. Within the local market, GTCO processed N2.45 trillion in transactions. A large portion of this was carried out through Point of Sale (POS) systems and online platforms, totaling N2.4 trillion. ATM transactions within the local market accounted for N73.6 billion. Internationally, GTCO recorded N334 billion in debit card transactions during the first half of 2025. Further analysis of international transactions revealed that ATMs facilitated N110.3 billion, while POS and online platforms saw N224.2 billion in transactions. It’s worth noting that while the overall transaction volume is substantial, the international transactions for the period showed a decrease when compared with the N516 billion recorded in 2024.
In conclusion, GTCO’s robust debit card performance underscores the increasing preference for digital payments across both local and international markets. This trend suggests continued growth potential for digital financial services in Nigeria and across the broader African continent, with banks like GTCO playing a pivotal role in driving this evolution.
