Ghana Battles Escalating Cybercrime: Over GH¢19 Million Lost in First Nine Months of 2025
Ghana faces a growing threat from cybercrime, with losses exceeding GH¢19 million between January and September 2025. This alarming figure, disclosed by the Cyber Security Authority (CSA), highlights a troubling surge in online criminal activities that are increasingly targeting individuals and businesses across the nation. Online fraud has emerged as the most prevalent form of cybercrime, accounting for a significant portion of these financial setbacks and posing a substantial challenge to Ghana’s digital economy.
# Online Fraud Dominates Cybercrime Landscape, Causing Significant Financial Drain
The scale of the financial damage inflicted by cybercriminals became clear during a cybersecurity awareness event on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, co-organized by the Financial Intelligence Centre and the CSA. Isaac Socrates Mensah, a Senior Manager at the CSA, revealed that nearly half of all reported cybercrime cases within the first nine months of the year were directly linked to online fraud. This specific category alone resulted in a staggering loss of GH¢12.87 million, underscoring its devastating impact. Beyond online fraud, other pervasive forms of cybercrime contributing to the overall losses included various shopping scams, deceptive fake loan offers, elaborate romance and job scams, and unauthorized access to individuals’ online accounts. The revelation emphasizes the diverse tactics employed by cybercriminals to exploit unsuspecting victims. These figures underscore the urgent need for enhanced cybersecurity measures and public awareness campaigns to protect Ghana’s citizens and financial infrastructure from these evolving threats. In a related economic context at the time of reporting, the Cedi traded at GH¢12.41 to one US dollar on the interbank market.
The substantial financial losses to cybercrime, particularly online fraud, present a critical challenge for Ghana’s digital transformation journey. As the nation increasingly embraces digital platforms for transactions and communication, the imperative to bolster cybersecurity defenses and enhance public vigilance has never been greater. Continued collaboration between regulatory bodies, financial institutions, and the public is essential to mitigate these risks and safeguard the integrity of Ghana’s digital landscape against sophisticated cyber threats.
