Technology News: Akufo-Addo Administration Credited with New Vehicle Registration System
A recent debate has emerged regarding the origins of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority’s (DVLA) upcoming new vehicle registration numbering system in Ghana. Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, the former CEO of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), has asserted that the initiative was conceived and developed during the administration of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, specifically under the leadership of former DVLA Chief Executive, Kwasi Agyeman Busia.
Origins of the Numbering System
According to Ofosu Nkansah, the design of the new system, which involves removing the year of registration and introducing two alphabetic suffixes, received approval from the then Transport Minister, Kwaku Ofori Asiamah. He emphasized that the project’s foundation was laid well before the current DVLA leadership took office, suggesting that it’s a continuation of work initiated under the previous administration rather than a completely new innovation.
The debate highlights the ongoing efforts to modernize and improve systems within Ghana’s transportation sector. While the current DVLA leadership is moving forward with the implementation, the historical context of the project, as outlined by Ofosu Nkansah, attributes its initial conception and development to the Akufo-Addo administration.
