MultiChoice Content to Go Global Under Canal+ Ownership

Canal+, the French broadcasting giant, now controlling MultiChoice, is strategizing to export South African-made content to international audiences. This move leverages the growing expertise within South Africa’s production sector and aims to capitalize on the demand for diverse storytelling in global markets. This initiative signifies a significant step in showcasing African creativity on the world stage and highlights the evolving landscape of content distribution.

The core of Canal+’s strategy revolves around utilizing StudioCanal, its distribution arm, which already allocates approximately $234 million annually to films and series. The plan is to promote MultiChoice’s original productions in markets where foreign content enjoys significant viewership. This strategy is predicated on the view that South Africa’s production capabilities have significantly improved. MultiChoice invested over $1 billion in content during its recent financial year. Canal+ anticipates securing high-quality content and using South Africa’s lower production costs to create globally marketable series. They then aim to distribute these series in dollar- and euro-based markets, which have a growing appetite for varied narratives. This approach mirrors MultiChoice’s past global ambitions with Showmax, which had attempted to reach audiences in Australia, Europe, New Zealand, and North America, primarily targeting expatriates and international audiences.

This strategy is a vote of confidence in the talent of South African filmmakers and content creators. It also underscores the potential of African stories to resonate with global audiences, driven by the changing dynamics of the entertainment industry.
