Canal+ to Export MultiChoice’s African Content to International Markets
Canal+, the new owner of MultiChoice, is planning to expand its revenue streams by selling MultiChoice’s locally-produced content to international markets. Leveraging its content distribution arm, StudioCanal, Canal+ aims to export high-quality series from DStv, opening up new opportunities for African content to reach a global audience. This strategic move marks a significant development for African content creators and the broader entertainment industry on the continent.
StudioCanal to Drive Global Distribution of South African Series
According to David Mignot, CEO of Canal+ Africa, some South African productions are suitable for international consumption. Before content can be exported, however, it must undergo thorough vetting to ensure it meets the necessary quality standards. StudioCanal, a major European content distributor, is well-equipped to handle the global sales of MultiChoice’s content, enabling Canal+ to capitalize on existing production assets. Mignot highlighted StudioCanal’s established infrastructure and expertise in the international content market, positioning it as a critical component of this new strategy.
This initiative provides an opportunity for MultiChoice and the African entertainment industry to gain exposure in international markets. Canal+ will utilize StudioCanal to increase local content production and its worldwide promotion. This expansion highlights the growing demand for diverse content from Africa and the potential of the continent’s creative industries.
