Canal+ Aims to Elevate African Storytelling on the Global Stage
French media conglomerate Canal+, the new owner of MultiChoice, which operates DStv, has announced ambitious plans to propel African-made content onto the global stage. Through its international distribution arm, StudioCanal, Canal+ intends to export South African-produced movies and television shows to international markets, widening the reach of African narratives. This strategic move highlights a significant opportunity to showcase African talent and stories to a broader global audience.
Global Distribution of African Content
The initiative centers on leveraging StudioCanal’s extensive distribution network, which already handles significant European content exports. According to Canal+ Africa CEO David Mignot, the organization is eager to use StudioCanal’s robust infrastructure to promote African storytelling. Mignot emphasizes StudioCanal’s presence across many international markets, characterizing it as a leading exporter of European content worldwide. However, the plan includes stringent criteria, focusing on top-tier productions. The aim is to identify and distribute high-quality content that resonates with global audiences. Examples include series like Shaka iLembe and Spinners. The push signals a desire to capitalize on the growing global interest in diverse narratives and to solidify African stories’ place within the international media landscape.
The move by Canal+ represents a significant shift for African content creators, providing a larger platform and potential revenue streams. By taking African stories global, the organization is not only boosting the entertainment industry but also aiming to enrich the global media landscape with unique and authentic voices.
