In the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, Egypt, like many nations, struggled with a severe shortage of PCR test kits. The disruption of global supply chains, combined with overwhelming demand, made importing these essential tools both slow and prohibitively expensive. Despite donations from countries like the UK in mid-2020, Egypt’s testing capacity remained significantly below what was needed for its large population of over 100 million. This scarcity highlighted the urgent need for a local solution, paving the way for a remarkable technological innovation.
Reme: Answering the Call for Accessible Testing
Dr. Salma Tammam, a nanotechnology researcher, recognized the critical gap and the opportunity it presented. Motivated by the fact that “Healthcare facilities were desperately waiting for PCR test kits that could take weeks to arrive, while patients needed results within hours,” she took decisive action.
