Neibar: The App Revolutionizing Gifting in Africa
In many African communities, the tradition of hand-me-downs and thriving second-hand markets highlights a culture of resourcefulness. However, the paradox remains: usable items are still discarded while others struggle to afford basic necessities. Enter Neibar, a groundbreaking app launched in 2024 by Ugandan software developer Namwanza Ronald, aiming to bridge this gap by facilitating the free gifting of pre-owned goods.
Connecting Neighbors, Reducing Waste
Neibar’s mission is simple yet powerful: to reduce waste and combat inequality by making the act of gifting pre-owned items easy, accessible, and dignified. Recognizing that existing platforms primarily focus on buying and selling used goods, Ronald designed Neibar to fill the void. The location-based app allows users to list household items, school supplies, or workplace equipment they no longer need, enabling neighbors to easily claim and collect these items. As Ronald explained to TechCabal, “Neibar set out to close that gap by reducing waste and inequality across African communities, making purposeful giving easy, accessible, and stigma-free.”
Neibar represents a promising step towards a more sustainable and equitable future for African communities, leveraging technology to promote a culture of sharing and reduce unnecessary waste. By connecting neighbors and facilitating the free exchange of goods, Neibar empowers individuals to meet their needs while simultaneously contributing to a circular economy.
