Homegrown Solutions to Drive Digital Economy in Ghana

Ghana is prioritizing local talent and resources to establish a multi-billion dollar digital economy. This commitment was highlighted by the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, during the opening of the Africa Internet Summit (AIS) 2025 in Accra. The summit also celebrated 30 years of the internet in Ghana and the nation’s leading role in Africa’s digital evolution.

Focusing on Local Innovation

The government’s strategy centers on transitioning Ghana from a primary consumer of foreign technology to a producer of homegrown solutions. This approach involves cultivating indigenous tech talent through training and support for local start-ups. The strategy also aims to promote open digital infrastructure. These efforts are designed to retain more value within the Ghanaian economy and ensure sustainable growth in the technology sector. By investing in local innovation, Ghana aims to create a generation capable of designing, coding, securing, and scaling digital solutions, effectively reversing the trend of Africa primarily consuming technology developed elsewhere.

Ghana’s focus on developing its internal capabilities marks a crucial step towards digital sovereignty and economic empowerment within the African tech landscape. By prioritizing local talent and fostering a supportive ecosystem for indigenous innovation, the nation aims to unlock its full potential and establish itself as a key player in the global digital economy.
