Tunisia: Ahmed Souab’s Defense Team Demands Public Trial
The legal team representing Ahmed Souab, who has been detained since April on charges related to both terrorism and common law offenses, publicly called for an open and in-person hearing to address the accusations against their client. The case highlights ongoing concerns about freedom of expression and due process in Tunisia.
Legal Strategy and Concerns
During a press conference, lawyer Fedi Snene, a member of Souab’s defense committee, stated that the indictment division of the Tunis Court of Appeal upheld the charges against Souab on July 17th. These charges are based on Decree-Law 54, the anti-terrorism law, the Telecommunications Code, and the Penal Code. The defense team has decided not to appeal to the Court of Cassation at this stage, opting instead to await a hearing before the criminal chamber while reiterating their demand for a public and in-person trial. This decision underscores their belief that a transparent process is crucial for ensuring a fair outcome.
The Tunisian League for Human Rights (LTDH) President, Bassem Trifi, and Bar Association member, Adel Messaoudi, have expressed their solidarity with Ahmed Souab and other individuals they consider to be prisoners of conscience. The case continues to draw attention from human rights organizations, raising broader questions about the application of laws and the protection of civil liberties within Tunisia’s legal framework.
