Sonatrach Awards Pipeline Inspection Contract to Chinese Consortium

Sonatrach, the Algerian state-owned oil and gas company, announced on September 25th the signing of two service contracts with a Chinese consortium comprising CAIEC (China National Aero-Technology International Corp) and SLPI (Shenglong Oil And Gas Pipeline Inspection Technology Co., Ltd). These agreements mark a significant step in ensuring the safety and operational integrity of Algeria’s critical gas pipeline infrastructure.

Pipeline Inspection Details

The contracts focus on instrumented pipeline inspection (or “smart pigging”) of five gas pipelines. These pipelines have a combined length of 3,576 kilometers. The inspection efforts include two pipelines that supply gas to international clients: GO2, spanning 548 kilometers, and GPDF, stretching 521 kilometers. The contracts stemmed from an open national and international tender process, and each has a two-year (24-month) completion timeline. This agreement aligns with Algeria’s regulatory framework for infrastructure control and monitoring, particularly Decree No. 21-314, enacted on August 14, 2021. The implementation of these contracts reflects Sonatrach’s ongoing commitment to ensuring the security and efficiency of its gas pipeline network.

In the context of African energy infrastructure, this agreement represents a large investment.
