Gaza Flotilla Targeted by Drone Attacks: Mediterranean Tensions Rise
The international “Global Sumud” flotilla, aiming to break the blockade of Gaza, alleges it was targeted by multiple drone attacks in international waters off the coast of Greece. This incident has triggered a flurry of diplomatic responses. Italy and Spain have deployed military frigates to potentially assist in rescue operations, while the United Nations has called for an end to the attacks.
Details of the Alleged Attacks
According to organizers, between 15 and 16 drones allegedly targeted several of the fifty boats comprising the flotilla. These boats carried approximately 500 participants from 45 countries, including members of parliament, doctors, journalists, and activists. Reports include accounts of explosions, communication jamming, and unidentified objects being dropped from the air. Polish MP Franek Sterczewski stated that three vessels sustained damage.
This marks the second alleged attack on the flotilla, with a prior incident reported on the night of September 8-9. The situation remains tense, with international bodies closely monitoring developments and seeking a peaceful resolution.
