E-hailing Drivers at Odds Over Airport Parking in Nigeria
A brewing dispute within Nigeria’s e-hailing driver community highlights disagreements over operational strategies. The Amalgamated Union of App-based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON), a faction within the e-hailing drivers’ union, has publicly disagreed with a proposed plan regarding access to airport parking facilities. This internal conflict underscores the challenges facing the burgeoning ride-hailing industry in Nigeria as it navigates regulatory hurdles.
Jurisdiction Clash and Divergent Strategies
The core issue revolves around a proposal for e-hailing drivers to utilize airport car parks. The initial problem stemmed from Lagos airport authorities reportedly demanding a N45,000 fee and the mandatory wearing of Bolt-branded uniforms for e-hailing drivers to use airport taxi parking. The Adedamola-led union suggested a solution: the Ministry of Aviation should rent airport parking space for its members, with drivers making a daily token payment. AUATON, however, disputes this solution. According to a statement by Acting Factional President David Nosa and General Secretary Ayoade Ibrahim, the proposal infringes on established union principles and jurisdictional boundaries within the industry. This disagreement underscores the challenges of standardizing and harmonizing operations within the expanding ride-hailing sector in Nigeria and the tensions that can arise when different factions propose conflicting strategies.
In summary, the AUATON faction considers the original proposal as a violation of its jurisdiction.
